Law Minister Anisul Huq has termed unconstitutional today’s High Court verdict that scrapped the 16th amendment to constitution empowering the parliament to impeach Supreme Court judges for misconduct or incapacity.
“We will appeal with the apex court by Sunday or Monday where, we hope, the HC verdict will not stand,” Huq told the parliament.
During his statement in the parliament, the law minister said that government will not tolerate any conspiracy against democracy.
Earlier in the day, the High Court scrapped the 16th amendment to constitution that empowered the parliament to impeach SC judges for incapacity or misconduct.
Talking in in the parliament during point of order, two lawmakers of Jatiya Party (JP) and one from Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) lambasted the High Court for scrapping the 16th amendment saying that it is a kind of conspiracy against democracy.

A three-member special bench led by Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury by majority view declared the amendment illegal and unconstitutional following a writ petition that challenged the legality of the 16th amendment.
After the ruling, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said the government will appeal against it.
