Joya Sengupta, wife of recently late Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta, today collected nomination paper to contest Sunamganj-2 by-poll scheduled to be held on March 30.

On behalf of Joya, her son Suwmen Sengupta collected the nomination paper from Awami League Chief Seikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office, reports Bangla daily Prothom Alo.

The constituency (Dirai-Shalla) fell vacant following death of Suranjit Sengupta, a veteran parliamentarian, on February 5 after a prolonged illness.

Quoting a source close to the AL chief’s office, the daily reported that three more local AL leaders including Motiur Rahman, its district unit president, also collected nomination papers to contest the polls.

Kamrul Haque, personal assistant to the late Surangit Sengupta, told that Joya collected the nomination paper as local leaders and activists extended their all-out supports to her.

Kamrul said Joya was an administrative officer of Brac, non-government organisation, and she did not belong any position to Awami League or any its front bodies.

Awami League Parliamentary Board and Local Government Nomination Board will hold a meeting at Gono Bhaban, official residence of prime minister, on February 26 to finalise the nomination for the by-poll scheduled to be held on March 30.
